Nail Technology
Cosmetology Course (1500 Hours)
Course Description:
Students will be trained in basic practical skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to pass the Illinois State Board examination and for competency in job entry level positions in Cosmetology or related career field.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course requirements, the determined graduate will be able to:
- Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
- Practice proper grooming and effective communications skills and visual poise.
- Understand employer-employee relationships and respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received.
- Perform the basic manipulative skills including hair styling, shaping, bleaching, tinting, chemical reformation, scalp/hair conditioning, facials, manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions.
- Perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper makeup, hairstyle, and color application for the client’s best overall look.
- Apply the theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.
- Learn skills to take and pass the Illinois Cosmetology Exam for cosmetologist licensing.
- To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to techniques, trends, fashions, and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields.
Major Units of Instruction:
- General Theory and Basic Training – 150 hours Classroom instruction in general theory in the following subject areas: Tools and their Use, Shampoo, Understanding Chemicals and Use, Types of Hair, Sanitation, Hygiene, Skin Diseases and Conditions, Anatomy and Physiology, Electricity and Ethics.
- Practical Chemical Application and Hair Treatment – 500 hours
Instruction in a combination of class instruction and hands-on experience in the following subject areas: Permanent Waving, Hair Coloring and Bleaching, Hair relaxing, and Hair and Scalp Conditioning. - Hair Styling/Hair Dressing – 475 hours
Specific instruction in hair styling in a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience in the following subject areas: Cutting, Thinning, Shaping, Trimming, Application of Electrical or Mechanical Equipment, Marcelling, Curing and Hair Treatments. - Shop Management and Interpersonal Relations – 200 hours
Instruction in the following subject areas: Labor Law, Worker’s Compensation, Client Relations, Bookkeeping, Marketing and Merchandising, Emergency First Aid, Right-To-Know Laws, Pertinent State and Local Laws and Rules, Business Math, Safety with Electrical Devices, and Business Ethics - Esthetics – 85 hours
- Nail Technology – 55 hours
- Electives – 35 hours
Coordinated classroom and practical experience in elective and review areas, including reviewing the Illinois Cosmetology Licensing Exam.

Grading System:
Elle International Beauty Academy uses the following grading system:
93% – 100% A Excellent
85% – 92% B Above Average
75% – 84% C Satisfactory Progress Minimum (75%)
74% and below D Unsatisfactory
Students must maintain a theory grade average of 75% and pass a final written and practical exam of 85% or above prior to graduation. Students must make up failed or missed tests and incomplete assignments.
Esthetics Course (750 Hours)
Course Description:
The Esthetics Course was designed for the esthetics student starting at the beginning. We’ll guide you through the entire educational process, including everything you need to feel confident in a spa, salon or clinical environment. The course will prepare each student for the Illinois Esthetician License.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course requirements, the graduate will be able to:
- Perform and meet the standards set by the school and the esthetic industry
- Perform technical, communication, and servicing skills
- Successfully complete the State of Illinois requirements to practice esthetics
- Exhibit the kind of professionalism necessary to gain and maintain entry level employment.
- Learn skills to take and pass the Illinois Esthetician Exam for esthetics licensing.
- To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to techniques, trends, fashions, and methods for career development in esthetics and related career positions.
Major Units of Instruction:
- Basic Training – 75 hours
History of skin care, personal hygiene and public health, professional ethics, sterilization and sanitation, introduction to skin analysis and skin care and facial treatments
- Scientific Concepts – 150 hours
Cells, Metabolism, Body Systems, Bacteriology, Physiology and Histology of the Skin, Human Anatomy, Chemistry – understanding chemicals and their use, Disorders of the skin and special esthetics procedures
- Practices and Procedures – 500 hours
non-therapeutic massage, excluding the scalp; nutrition and health of skin; skin analysis; cleansing the skin; therapy and facial treatments; facial treatments without the aid of machines; electricity, machines and apparatus; facial treatments with the aid of machines; hair removal; including tweezer method, depilitators, waxing and their use; professional makeup techniques; product knowledge as it relates to esthetics.
- Business Practices – 25 hours
The Act and this Part, Management, OSHA standards relating to chemical use; and Workers’ Compensation Act.

Nail Technology Course (350 Hours)
Course Description:
The nail technology course will prepare the student for a career in the field of nail technology. The student will cover the necessary knowledge that is required to complete the full curriculum of 350 hours that consists of both theory and intensive hands-on practical studies.

- Learn skills to take and pass the Nail Technology Exam for nail technician licensing.
- To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to techniques, trends, fashions, and methods for career development as a Nail Technician, Manicurist or related position.
Major Units of Instruction:
- Basic Training – 50 hours
classroom instruction in general theory practical application (i.e., practicing nail technology on the public) and technical application (e.g., practicing the technical application on mannequin fingers or on the fingers of another student) shall be provided in the following subject areas: History of nail care; Personal hygiene and public health; Professional ethics; Sterilization and disinfection; Bacteriology; Disorders of the nails; OSHA standards relating to material safety data sheets (MSDS) on chemicals; Chemicals and their use; and Technical applications of chemicals.
- Related Concepts – 15 hours
Cells, metabolism and body systems; Theory of massage; and People skills.
- Practices and Procedures – 255 hours
Fabric procedures; Sculpting procedures; Light cured gels; Machines or apparatus used in nail technology; Manicures; Pedicures; Hand, arm and foot massage; Other procedures as they relate to nail technology; and Product knowledge as it relates to nail technology.
- Business Practices – 30 hours
The Act and this Part, Management, OSHA standards relating to chemical use; and Workers’ Compensation Act.
